Corinth, Mississippi – Alcorn County Electric Power Association’s (“ACE Power”) fiber subsidiary, ACE Fiber, announced its expansion into New Albany, Mississippi to serve the New Albany electric footprint by bringing fast and reliable fiber internet to residents. The 5-step construction process began in November and residents can expect technicians to install the fiber network neighborhood-by-neighborhood throughout different stages.
ACE Power historically only served Alcorn County residents as their name suggests. In 1934, Alcorn County farmers and neighbors pioneered the first electric cooperative in the United States with a mission to provide electricity to everyone in the area. The member-owned cooperative launched its subsidiary, ACE Fiber, in 2019 to meet the growing demand for reliable and high-quality fiber optic internet.
In just a few years, ACE Fiber outpaced national brands by offering its subscribers fast internet and responsive local service. ACE Fiber offers an upfront, no-nonsense internet service with no contracts required, no hidden fees, no data caps, free equipment, and free installation. It’s also affordable and fast, with speeds up to 10 Gbps. Now, ACE Fiber plans to extend these benefits to the residents of New Albany.
“Since 2019, our team at ACE has worked diligently to bring the fastest fiber optic network in America to Alcorn County while maintaining our focus on unrivaled service,” says Sean McGrath, CEO of ACE Power. “We’re both proud and excited to partner with New Albany Light Gas and Water to bring these same levels of quality, reliability and service to the subscribers in Union County.”
How Fiber-Optic Internet Improves the Quality of Life in Communities
New Albany residents living within the New Albany electric footprint and subscribe to ACE Fiber should expect to see much faster upload and download speeds, the ability to stream in multiple rooms, more opportunities for remote work and learning, and an increase in entertainment options. Telehealth options provide efficient methods for resolving medical issues and speedy internet means more access to educational resources for completing homework. College-aged and early-twenties adults are more likely to live and invest in the New Albany economy with access to the internet because of the remote school and work opportunities.
Businesses, too, benefit greatly from a fiber-optic network. Local businesses may seek E-commerce platforms for selling products online and extending their product lines. Consumers reap the benefits of online payment options for services and products that once needed to occur in person. Business owners become more organized and efficient with online inventory, databases, and accounting systems.
“The decision to partner with ACE Power in this project is one that makes complete sense and will help us efficiently bring fiber internet to our community members and businesses in our electric footprint,” says Bill Mattox, General Manager of New Albany Light Gas and Water. “We’ve seen the great work and results that Sean and the ACE team have produced in their fiber project in Alcorn County and are confident that subscribers in New Albany will receive the speed they need and the services they deserve once the project is complete.”
The Construction Process
Step one of the construction process, which officially kicked off in November, begins with the installation of the telecommunications hut. The hut houses the optical equipment, switches, and routers for generating fiber-optic internet in the surrounding area.
Step two includes the construction of the mainline fiber network. Once this process begins, residents can expect a 3–4-month period before fiber internet may be connected to their homes. Step three includes splicing, a fancy term for connecting the fiber-optic cables together to form a whole network. When the splicing stage begins, ACE Fiber indicates this on its coverage map by highlighting a neighborhood in yellow.
Step four of the process involves a technician installing the drop to a resident’s home to connect them to the fiber network. Step five is the last step of the construction process, and it includes placing a Network Interface Device on the resident’s home. This small telecommunications box is spliced together with the Optical Network Termination (ONT) box which connects to the router inside the resident’s home.
“While the fiber construction process is complex and dependent on numerous factors, our team is confident in our abilities to progress through our plan relatively quickly and begin providing services to homes around early summer of 2024,” McGrath added.
As the project continues, residents are encouraged to track progress and up-to-date availability for their specific address and join the New Albany/Union County Facebook group for the latest news and updates. Once they provide their basic information, interested subscribers will be notified when coverage is available in their area.
