Trevor Williams has owned Smith Drug Co. in Rienzi, MS since 2004 when he took it over from his father. The drug store is over 100 years old and was founded by his great-uncle.
In 2014, the original building tragically burned down. Trevor told us, “It was one of the toughest times I’ve ever been through in my life. Just late one night it burned and was a complete loss. When I got here and saw it, it was already gone, and I dropped down and hit my knees.”
Even though this was a great loss, Trevor said that the next morning, things turned around because people from around the community started reaching out to him to help, like the man who offered to let him use his building temporarily. With some time, Trevor was able to rebuild in 2016.
Trevor said that his wife helped design the new building so that it would not look too commercial. To pay homage to the former building, they used some of the same bricks.

If you live locally, you know that the hand-dipped ice cream is some of the best around. “Obviously our main business is prescriptions and medicines, but we feel like we have pretty good out-front merchandise with really anything that you could need in a drugstore. But yeah, ice cream is our calling card.”
Not to mention, the customer service is so warm and welcoming. Trevor said that the relationships he has built with his customers and the interactions he has with them are what makes him want to come in every day.
“It sounds cliché, but we like to be like family, we really do. We want to not only be just a place to come and get something, but a place where you feel like somebody. All of my employees are great at customer service and really go above and beyond taking care of people. That is what we hang our hat on, is serving the community and serving people.”

“My favorite part about Alcorn County is just how ‘down-home’ it is. You cannot find any better people. Like when our store burned, how they reached out to me. People are so down-to-earth and so good-hearted around here, so that’s a big reason I’ve always stayed here.”
Trevor also said that he feels proud to be carrying on the family business. There’s something special about offering good service and products to your home community. He said, “I grew up a block from here, so I know everyone in the community and at church. There’s a pretty big connection there for me.”
We asked what Trevor’s goal is for his business, and he told us, “We just want to continue to be a shining light in this community. Because we’ve been here so long, the tradition is there, and we don’t want to do anything to mess up that tradition.”
