John Mabry, Head Chef and Owner of Vicari, studied in France and lived all over the United States before landing in Corinth. He took a historical building downtown that stood in disrepair, and with the help of a talented team, he restored it back to better than before. Now, it’s one of the most beautiful restaurants in Mississippi, if not anywhere, with exposed brick, natural wooden surfaces, and a grand piano in the foyer.
The elegant building matches the cuisine which John has carefully curated. Vicari offers a robust lunch menu, a diverse dinner menu, and a carefully chosen wine and libations list. It’s difficult for Chef John to pick favorites, but he told us that diners can’t go wrong with any of the steaks.
Through the years, Chef John enjoyed watching wedding parties, retirements, reunions, and groups of people gathering around a table together for various celebrations. He considers it a privilege to be part of a tight-knit community where some diners dine in for lunch and dinner almost every day!
“There’s a lot of great heartwarming stories,” said Chef John. “Lots of wedding receptions, wedding proposals, and family reunions. It’s just a great gathering place.”
Why Chef John Loves Corinth
It’s the little things that make Corinth so endearing to Chef John, like the train that runs right behind the restaurant 35 times a day! The train whistle reminds natives of the history of Corinth and the industry that the city was built around. It’s one of the many advancements that helped connect Corinth to the rest of the world.
“I went from Knoxville to the Waldorf Astoria in New York, then to culinary school in France, then to Nashville, Miami, and Dallas. I moved back here around 12 years ago,” Chef John told us. “It was a little bit of a culture shock in the beginning, but then I absolutely fell in love with Corinth. They are a very welcoming community. They treat you like family because they truly believe you are family, and ACE is very similar to that.”
Along with the railroad, Alcorn County was the first town in the United States to form an electric cooperative. The citizens of Alcorn County banded together to provide electricity for their neighbors, mom-and-pop shops, churches, and schools in 1934. Now, ACE Power’s subsidiary ACE Fiber provides high-speed, fiber-optic internet with that same sense of community growth and empowerment.
Why Vicari Runs on ACE
Chef John expects nothing but the best from his staff, facilities, and menu items. So, it makes sense that he expects the best power, phone service, and internet connection in town. In his opinion, the best option in town is ACE Fiber.
“ACE is so great to work with because they are here at home, and you can call a person who answers the phone, talks to you, walks you through whatever is going on—that’s even from the sales process to the installation process,” said Chef John.
It’s not just about the speedy internet, dependable phone connection, and being a member of the power cooperative. Chef John needs customer service he can count on, especially in critical moments like lunchtime, dinner time, and weekends.
“I had some problems a few weeks ago, and it was not an internet problem. The phones at the front desk, the host had broken the clips off, and I called [ACE] and asked, ‘Where do I call to order these?’ They said, ‘We’ll bring some out today,’” said Chef John. “It’s nice having real people, that are in your community, that care about your business, and care about what’s happening with you.”
